The Ugly Ugly Truth about Political Violence and Assasinations

Recently, Chris (I have a tingle running up my leg) Matthews, Nancy (Frozen Face Shrew) Pelosi, and Tom (everyone is stupid but me) Friedman, recently have desperately tried to start the meme that vigorous disagreement with the President through either rallies or rambunctious Town Hall Meetings will lead to poltical violence and perhaps even an assasination attempt.

This ploy is such a naked attempt to delegitimize opponents of the President that it is almost not worthy of commenting on, and those who are trying to push this "theory" should be held in total disregard and utter comtempt.

However,  when actual facts about political violence are analyzed, the ugly ugly truth is far more different than Matthews,Pelosi and Friedman would have you believe.

First, it should be noticed that the two documented cases of political violence that took place over the August recess and the town hall meetings were  a Union Thug from SEIU (see Acorn) roughing up protestors against socialized medicine and  an Obama supporter biting off the finger of a town hall protestor.

So,  lets make sure we keep things in Perspective.

Reviewing the last 100 years of Assasinations and attempted Assasinations of either Presidents or Presidential Candidates has been very interesting and some definite patterns arise.  See if YOU can spot the pattern.

William McKinley - 1901 - Assasin - Leon Czolgosz - Politics (Leftist Anacharist - like today's WTO Protestors)

Theodore Roosevelt - 1912 - Attempted Assasin - John Schrank - Poltics (Unknown, but he was put in a mental hospital afterwards)

Franklin D. Roosevelt - 1933 - Attempted Assasin - Giuseppe Zangara - Politics (Communist)

Harry Truman - 1950 - Attempted Assasin - Oscar Col lazo & Griselio Torresola - Politics (Puerto Rican Nationalists)

John F. Kennedy - 1963 - Assasin - Lee Harvey Oswald - Poltics (Communist, Pro-Castro) - As much as Oliver Stone wants to create the myth that the CIA and the far-right killed Kennedy, facts do NOT back up his claim.  Lee Harvey Oswald defected to the Soviet Union and was vigrously Pro-Castro, case CLOSED.

Robert Kennedy - 1968 - Assasin - Sirhan Sirhan - Poltics (Anti-Israel Palestinian Terrorist)

George Wallace - 1972 - Attempted Assasin (paralyzed) - Politics (unknown fame seeking nut (plotted to assasinate Richard Nixon as well)

Richard Nixon - 1974 - Attempted Assasin - Samuel Byck - Politics (Leftist, Attempted to join Black Panther party, communist)

Gerald Ford - 1975 - Attempted Assasin - Squeaky Fromme - Politics (Manson Family Nut)
Gerald Ford  - 1975 - Attempted Assasin - Sarah Jane Moore - Politics ( Radical Leftist)

Ronald Reagan - 1981 - Attempted Assasin - John Hinkley - Politics (unknown fame seeking nut)

George H.W. Bush - 1993 - Attempted Assasin - Iraqi Security Agents - Politics (Revenge for Gulf War)

Bill Clinton - 1994 - Attempted Assasin - Frank Corder - Politics (unknown fame seeking nut)

George Bush - 2001 - Attempted Assasin - Unknown Arab Men - Poltics (Terrorists)

This last incidence is the most fascinating, as I had never heard of it before.  The probable assasination plot was attempted on the morning of 9/11/01 when a group of Arab Men showed up at the Florida hotel that George Bush was staying in wanting to have an interview.  When the Secret Service said they could not confirm that such an interview had been scheduled, they drove off and were never heard from again.  Obviously this appears to be part of the overall terrorist attack of 9/11.

Amazingly I see no right wing nuts on this list, but I see quite a few communists, radical leftists, terrorists and generally mentally ill people.  I think Matthews, Pelosi and Friedman should be worried more about their OWN supporters being the purveyors of political violence rather than people on the right of the political spectrum.

And lest we also forget, the incident that Nancy Pelosi was crying about, the assasination of Harvey Milk & George Moscone in San Francisco in 1978 was committed by DEMOCRAT Dan White not over politics but over a job dispute.

Media Matters talked about this too: “In that third year of the Kennedy presidency,” [William] Manchester wrote, “a kind of fever lay over Dallas country. Mad things happened. Huge billboards screamed, ‘Impeach Earl Warren.’ Jewish stores were smeared with crude swastikas.…Radical Right polemics were distributed in public schools; Kennedy’s name was booed in classrooms; corporate junior executives were required to attend radical seminars.”

A retired major general ran the American flag upside down, deriding it as “the Democrat flag.” A wanted poster with J.F.K.’s face on it was circulated, announcing “this man is Wanted” for—among other things—“turning the sovereignty of the US over to the Communist controlled United Nations” and appointing “anti-Christians … aliens and known Communists” to federal offices.

And a full-page advertisement had appeared the day of the assassination in The Dallas Morning News accusing Kennedy of making a secret deal with the Communist Party; when it was shown to the president, he was appalled. He turned to Jacqueline, who was visibly upset, and said, “Oh, you know, we’re heading into nut country today.”

Manchester discovered that in a wealthy Dallas suburb, when told that President Kennedy had been murdered in their city, the students in a fourth-grade class burst into applause.

Today, conservatives are expressing outrage that Rep. Nancy Pelosi had the nerve to raise concerns about the onrush of violent political rhetoric. The Noise Machine claims it has no idea what Pelosi's talking about. But the truth is, America's most famous bouts of political violence (i.e. JFK, Oklahoma City, etc.) have always been accompanied by waves of radical, right-wing rhetoric. Given that history, the GOP's insistence that the hate now filling the streets couldn't possibly inspire violence seems woefully naive." - from:

Even more interesting reading shows how low Richard Nixon could get - "Within hours of the 1972 assassination attempt on independent presidential candidate George C. Wallace, then-President Richard M. Nixon and a top aide agreed to dispatch a political operative to plant campaign literature of Democratic contender George S. McGovern in the home of Wallace's assailant, according to a report based on still-unreleased White House tapes."

You selected assasinations to make your point and left out several. Also, comparing Presidents to non-presidents isn't helpful. Check out this - you'll see most assasinations or attempted ones in U.S. history tend to be by lone men, and crazy, their place on the political spectrum is almost moot:

If the Lone crazed gunman theory is correct (and I agree with you that it is), than Matthews, Pelosi and Friedman should stop trying to make the point that political disagreement leads to more assasination attempts.

It is disingeniuous and anti-democratic.
